Calico Crab Exoskeleton

Description:

Brightly colored two- to four-inch scavenging crab, with red patches on a gray to pale yellow carapace. This coloring enables it to bury itself in sandy areas of shallow waters, and blend into the substrate to hide.

Habitat:

Sandy or muddy bottoms, often in shallow waters.

Notes:

Also known as Shamefaced and Leopard crab. I found this exoskeleton lying in the sand at the beach and thought it was beautiful!
