Cypress-leaved Plait-moss

Hypnum cupressiforme

Description:

Plait-moss stalks; The first two pictures show the moss while soaking wet, which is why it looks shiny and gelatinous. The third ids the same patch of moss some days earlier, included for comparison and to demonstrate how the moss usually looks. The stalks are just starting to grow in this picture. Once they have reached their full height the capsules will form on top.

Habitat:

This moss is growing at the top of a wood pile (elm logs), left uncovered for approximately 3 years now. The pile is at the foot of a large pine tree so is shaded most of the day.
