These were up on Lookout Mountain...they made a very brief visit...and I had to look at the pictures to figure out they were crossbills!! I've seen them on shows and it's almost like watching a parrot eat! They push their bills sideways apart between the pine cones to open it up and reach for the seed with their tongue...fascinating!
