Syrphid Flies, male and female (mating)

Toxomerus marginatus

Description:

Small fly with reddish eyes, brownish thorax and yellow and black abdomen. The color varies with temperature (more reddish with warmth). Adults of this species feed on pollen and nectar while the larvae feed on aphids, small caterpillars and thrips (bugguide).

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

I have been seeing these flies since mid spring. They are all over the garden.
