Description:

Several grayish-white seabirds, a foot long, give or take a couple of inches.

Habitat:

Small, low-lying tropical islet. Windward coastal ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotting nesting on the ground. Possibly some sort of tern or booby.

Two birds of similar general appearance to the wedge-tailed shearwaters, namely sooty shearwaters (Ardenna grisea) and short-tailed shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostris) visit Hawaii, but don't nest here, so I don't think they are likely to be what I spotted.

These birds may be wedge-tailed shearwaters (Puffinus pacificus). They nest in burrows, and I don't recall seeing any. Indeed, I saw one chick above ground.
