Yeah the place where I found it seemed amazing to me as well. That is why I was in doubt.
I did not know it grew in South Africa. Now I am pretty convinced that its Californian poppy. Thanks for the ID Wendy.
I have see the map where you found it...what amazing topography! Guess there aren't many gardens that high up! so yes very interesting!
In South Africa, it is part of most gardens; grows like a weed in my garden! Think it was brought over due for ornamental purposes.

Yes it is - Eschscholtzia californica
Bright and pretty! Also used in herbal medicine for it's calming effects.
