Platycryptus undatus
This very small spider has made a meal out of a very small hover fly. They are both on the inside of the screen -- the screen that is designed to keep them out!
As the people at Shaw Nature Reserve put it: Missouri is known for its rich and beautiful collection of natural habitats as well as for its complex and diverse geology. Since Shaw Nature Reserve sits at the juncture of several of these major Midwestern habitats, the diversity of both plant and animal life is great.
It was the first day of BugShot! 2011. Only a handful of us had arrived when I spotted this spider in the window. Also Shaw Nature Reserve was incredible!
I think it may be a female Platycryptus undatus... Man Thomas Shahan's shots jump out like crazy on the buggude.net search -- and of course he's only got shots of the males up there!
Very nice! I love this series! It may be worth it to check the genus Platycryptus, and maybe some other related genera.
I've added another shot, but it's out of focus... might be enough to help with id though. Unfortunately, not being able to easily "zoom out" is one of the weaknesses of the bellow+reversed lens kits -- neither of these shots have been cropped!
TK, do you have a zoomed out version of this photo so I can make an ID? Thanks! Nice spotting! I love the macro!
