Burying Beetle with Phoretic Mites

Nicrophorus orbicollis

Description:

With some help from Alex Wild and a couple of other entomologists/photographers, we managed to get the beetle to pose for this shot. The mites are completely harmless to the beetle, and are just along for the ride. If anyone can help me ID the mites beyond 'phoretic' , that would be amazing!

Habitat:

Shaw Nature Reserve.

Yes, he shows that you don't need fancy, expensive equipment to achieve wonderful macro shots.

Thomas Shahan is truly an amazing photographer of arthropods! I've been following his work since 2008, and he still blows my mind all the time.

Wow, talk about an all-star cast! I was just sharing work by Shahan this morning on Facebook. He's from my area and often hangs out at the Nature Center where my most recent spottings are from.

It was cool! I was lucky enough to get a seat at BugShot 2011 -- where I took these shots. Alex Wild, John Abbott, and Thomas Shahan for 3 and a half days. It was pretty awesome.

I think it's cool that you were hanging out with Alex Wild. :-)
