Lerema accius
spotted among weeds in small community graveyard
Thanks for the further comment, gatorfellows (sorry to be so late in responding). I believe it is a female; so with your support, I will edit the spotting.
Wish I was so good at skipper ID that I can tell the gender. Can only do that on the most obvious species. I am still learning to ID form photos, so am reluctant to judge size of spots, since they can change with angles and flatness of photo. Your first photo does appear to have a large spot like a female and I do use and trust the duke site, but they do not call the sex on many of the other photos they offer. I would not argue with you if you wish to call yours a female.
Emma, this is a very small historic graveyard in my neighborhood. Unfortunately it's not well kept and is surrounded by homes so there aren't many raptors about. Today there were a flock of grackles in the oaks after the cicadas though.
That was swift and to the point, gatorfellows; thanks. Do you suppose it's a female because of the size of the spots? (comparing here:http://www.duke.edu/~jspippen/butterflies/cloudedskipper.htm)
My neighbor told me that there are lots of birds of raptors in the grave yard. Did you see any?
