Cooper's Hawk

Accipiter cooperii

Description:

Medium 14-20" bird. Wing span to 2 1/2 feet. Short wings, long rounded tail with several black bands. Rusty breast, dark wing tips. Slate gray back. Bright yellow spot on base of the gray bill. Dark red eyes. The female is similar except slightly larger. Have one brood of 2-4 young per year.

Habitat:

Lives in areas around cities and will find bird feeders to hunt unsuspecting smaller birds. It ambushes it's prey.

Notes:

it will purse it's prey through heavy bush or even run on the ground after it. Information came from Birds of New Mexico Field Guide by Stan Tekiela. Note: The bird has bands on both legs.
