Cervus canadensis
On 8/26/12 in the afternoon at Rocky Mountain National Park, we were on Cub Lake Trail and saw the herd of elk running down the hill across South Lateral Moraine Trail so we quickly switched trails and followed them and watched them while on South Lateral Moraine Trail. The herd ended up near S. Moraine Road, that is where we got the closest to them. They were so beautiful and intriguing to watch move across the land. The interactions/behavior among the group dynamic were very interesting. Also, the bugling sounds they make were amazing. It was a really neat experience.

Hello. The elk or wapiti has the scientific name Cervus canadensis. Please add this to your spotting in the space reserved for scientific name since you have already labeled your spotting as an elk. This will then be automatically marked as "identified" in the Project Noah database. Thanks
Thanks Emily! I took these pics this last Sunday 8/26 at RMNP. It was spectacular! I would love to go again soon! I really like your Moose picture, so jealous!
Thanks! I would like to look some of the scientific names and general info and add it. We went to Rocky Mountain National Park last Sunday and the best part of the day was spent following a herd of elk for several hours, it was wonderful to watch their behaviors and hear them bugling etc.
I agree with ForestDragon! Especially the day and location! Did you take these at RMNP today?! If so, I need to get up there this weekend if the rut is already starting!
I am really enjoying your spottings, Kathryn. Would you be able to give us some more info on all of your wonderful postings? (Scientific names, general info on the animals, where you saw them). It would be interesting to know how you had the fortune to share these amazing creatures with us!
