American Alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

This prehistoric creature often lays in wait in the water or on the banks for any opportunity to eat. In this image an unfortunate American Coot was the menu choice. The alligator thrashed around and chomped repeatedly to kill the bird then manipulated it to get it head first and is in the process of swallowing it whole. The amazing large feet of the coot can be clearly seen.

Habitat:

Wetlands in Florida
