unidentified lizardfish

Description:

Light gray fish with light brown-beige mottled stripes and a visage evocative of a lizard, about 6 inches long.

Habitat:

Nearshore tropical waters.

Notes:

Spotted in about four feet of water just offshore of Mokuleia Beach, lying on the bottom partly buried in sand. This commonplace behavior helps camouflage the fish as it lies in ambush, waiting for prey to happen by.
