Grey Hairstreak

Strymon melinus

Description:

iridescent navy on the dorsal side

Habitat:

Carolinian forest

Notes:

I spotted this along a less maintained trail feeding goldenrod. It was my first time seeing this butterfly. There were a lot of other insects around. At times there were at least 4 cucumber beetles, a bee and a cabbage white butterfly, all on one flowerhead!

Thanks Carol! I couldn't believe it either when it rested for a short time with its wings open. I didn't know they were that color because they fly around so frantically you can't see it.

How lovely. I saw one last summer and amazed at its beauty and its fake antennae moving. I couldn't tell what was head or tail. Great series!
