Peregrine Falcon (juvenile)

Falco peregrinus

Description:

The Peregrine Falcon is a large raptor that is easily recognized by the dark markings on its head. The bird's chin and neck are white, and each eye is surrounded by a yellow circle. Dark wings and back. Juveniles have brown barring against a white background on the underparts while adults have much darker barring. Females are considerably larger than males.

Habitat:

Spotted perching on top of a very tall tower (seen in pic 6) at the Arcata Marsh and Bird Sanctuary. The surrounding area and habitats consist of freshwater marshes, salt marsh, tidal sloughs, grassy uplands, mudflats, brackish marsh, riparian woodlands, and open meadows.

Notes:

The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is a constructed wetland and a model restoration project with enhancement marshes used as part of the City of Arcata's wastewater treatment facility. This innovative design has been an inspiration to other communities around the country.
