Dark brown butterfly with orange on the front tips, red stripes on the front edge and white dots forming a stripe making a "V" pattern on the top. The bottom of the wings are light orange, gray/blue and white.
Mud along pond in Oak forest at Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. The range is "Far western North American; from west edge of interior deserts to Pacific coast in Baja California, California, Oregon, barely into westernmost Nevada, and occasionally into Washington (probably as a stray)." - BugGuide
There were a lot of these landing high in the Oak trees. "Mostly mountain and canyon terrain. Associated with Oaks (Quercus species, which are the larval food plants." - BugGuide
