Thanks for pointing me in the milkweed direction! After looking more into this I'm thinking it's Butterfly Weed/Indian Paintbrush (Asclepias tuberosa) because of the dry prairie location/soil and differing inner flower petal shapes. The scarlet milkweed flowers look to cluster differently in pictures too, but I'm not sure if what I've found online is a good representation of the species to compare with.
