This is a neat find. I believe this is actually a Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca sexta). Tomato Hornworms have eight V-shaped stripes on their sides. Yours has seven diagonal stripes.

Those white things on your poor caterpillar are cocoons. It looks like they have mostly hatched as you can see inside some of them.
