Strix varia
Found sitting on the branch of a Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, in the forest behind my workshop. This forest was mature, large trees with open understory, when I moved here 50 years ago. Magnolias were not common then but now are very abundant. These owls have always been here but the horizontal branches are perfect for them to perch on.
There were two owls talking to each other when I took this shot.
