Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Description:

This is two different birds. One was sitting on a nest and did not move the entire time we were there. The other was sitting higher in the tree keeping an eye on us. Great Horned Owls are our largest own and will take prey up to and possible greater than their own size. They have orange faces and large yellow eyes which make them distinctive. The 'horns' are in fact feather tufts and can be lowered. Their call is a low, deep 'who who who who' that can be heard for some distance through quiet night woods.
