Lichenomorphus sp.
Camouflaged grasshopper as in the photo.
Small patch of rain forest at around 975 m, close to Moyabamba.
This grasshopper is clearly impersonating something such as lichen, but I do not know what. Lichenomorphus Taxonomic classification Empire : Animalia (Animals) Tribe : Arthropoda (Arthropods) Class : Insecta (Insects) Order : Orthoptera (Rightwing) Family : Tettigoniidae (Saber grasshoppers) Lichenomorphus is a genus of Orthoptera from family katydids (Tettigoniidae). The scientific name of this genus has been validly published for the first time in 2011 by Cadena-Castañeda.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated Les!
Thanks Williams family and Lauren.
I do love it when I see an amazing imitating insect - not that I do very often.
Here is the link to a fantastic preying mantis I saw in 2011.
