Thank you Lois and Karen for the information. My spelling and identification has not been top notch.
It is the great egret, as Lois suggested, and a herring is a fish. I suggest the word you were originally seeking was heron(which is the same family as egret). Great spotting and one of my favorite birds. I'm always snapping pictures of them because they are so elegant
