Blue Crab

Callinectes sapidus

Description:

The blue crab has an average life-span of 1-3 years and it can grow to be between 1 and 2 pounds. It has ten appendages, making it a decapod. The largest appendages are a pair of arms ending in pincer-like claws. The crab uses these for defense and to grasp and crush its prey. Its back 2 appendages are paddle shaped, which allows the crab to swim more actively than other crab species. One important fact about the blue crab is that its "paddle fins" are flexible and can rotate in a sculling action that allows the crab to swim at bursts of up to 1 meter per second.

Habitat:

Blue crabs are found in brackish coastal lagoons and estuaries from Nova Scotia, through the Gulf of Mexico, and as far south as Uruguay. They are close relatives of the shrimp and lobster. They are bottom dwellers and omnivores. The blue crab is abundant in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlanctic Ocean. It is the crab most commonly found in Louisiana waters.

Hello Kayla13 and Welcome to the Project Noah community!
Your spotting is not according to our "rules" FAQ,we dont acept fishing,or hunting trophy's,we are a pro-life community. So i ask you to substitute the photos for others of a organism in his habitat,ok?Thanks on advance :)
We hope you like the website as much as we do. There are many aspects to the site and community. The best way to get started is to read the FAQs at http://www.projectnoah.org/faq where you can find all the tips, advice and "rules" of Project Noah. You, like the rest of the community, will be able to suggest IDs for species that you know (but that have not been identified), and make useful or encouraging comments on other users' spottings (and they on yours).
There are also "missions" you can join and add spottings to. See http://www.projectnoah.org/missions . A mission you should join is the http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/2166... to chose the best wild photo of 2017,only the spottings added to that mission are eligible.Note that most missions are "local". Be sure not to add a spotting to a mission that was outside of mission boundaries or theme :) Each mission has a map you may consult showing its range. We also maintain a blog archive http://blog.projectnoah.org/ where we have posted previous articles from specialists from different geographical areas and categories of spottings, as well as wildlife "adventures".
So enjoy yourself, share, communicate, learn. See you around :)
