Smaller fly. Gray body, red eyes. Distinct black stripes and dark spots between. Coarse long bristles on thorax and transparent wings. This species of fly is predatory. They are also called "Hunter Flies" or "Killer Flies".
Suburban backyard garden.
I have been trying to get a good photo of these flies for several weeks. Finally, one decided to allow me to get a couple of good shots in.
