Varanus nebulosus
The Clouded Monitor is a forest monitor species which can reach 1.5 metres. Similar to the the Malayan Water Monitor, it has slit nostrils and is paler in colour. This species can be found in habitats ranging from scrubland to rainforest, but is often seen as it digs in leaf litter searching for insects.
Spotted in a clearing at Butik Batok, a former quarry with secondary forest regrowth.
This monitor is also often seen high up on tree trunks or exploring tree holes: it has sharp claws and is an excellent climber.

Thank you all! There's much more to Singapore than shopping malls, and every remaining patch of forest is well worth exploring.
