European green lizard (Σμαραγδόσαυρα)

Lacerta viridis

Description:

A male European green lizard, wich was hunted and seriously injured by a cat, in Nea Dimitriada suburb, Volos city, Greece. A dear friend informed me about the incident, and eventually I collected the lizard and took it home for the first aid, and I contacted the wildlife specialists from the former wildlife sanctuary in my home town, and also a reptile specialist from Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece, for their advice. Although I followed their instructions, the lizard, unfortunately did not survive. (Body lenght, 15cm, the tail is missing)

Habitat:

There are gardens and empty sections all around the city, that they're working as wildlife cells, for native animal species of all kinds. The area where that male lizard was found, consists in a neighbourhood with large veggie gardens, and such reptiles are very common, although undetected from most owners. On the other hand, there is also a growing number of stray and domestic cats, which poses a great risk for these fragile ecosystems

Notes:

We enjoy the Halcyon days, so weather is warm and temperatures pretty high...Lizards and other reptiles woke from their hybernation, that's why that male lizard was up this early...We expect a new low within a few days, but spring is allready around the corner :)
