Bald-faced Hornet with prey (Giant Crane Fly)

Dolichovespula maculata

Description:

The ending for the female Giant Crane Fly (Tipula abdominalis) from this spotting from fellow Ranger DanDoucette: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/677... The hornet is actually black with white markings but is covered in dirt from the ground from the efforts of bringing down such a big prey item. It can be seen working on making it's prize a bit lighter so it could be carried off.

Habitat:

Short Hills Provincial Park, Ontario. Forest.

The other half of the action! Nice pic, the one I missed out on. BTW, missing an 'o' in my last name.
