Gopher Apple

Licania michauxii

Description:

A low-growing shrub of the Florida Scrub. The fruit was about the size of a large green Green Olive.

Habitat:

Upland Oak Scrub, Lyonia Preserve, Deltona, Florida

Notes:

The favorite food of the Gopher Tortoise. People can eat it too, and I SO wanted to try it. They say it tastes like bubblegum. But there was a tortoise burrow in the area, and I didn't want to deprive the lovely tortoise of his/her dinner.
