A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Caryota sp.
The fishtail palm uniquely has leaves that are subdivided twice. The shape of the leaflets give it its common name. It also has a distinct flowering structure that emerges as a mop-like cluster (not depicted). The palm grows commonly in secondary forests. There are four or more species of Caryota in Papua.
Observed growing in coastal mixed lowland equatorial rainforest (freshwater swamp forest/sago swamp).
