Syrphid Fly, male

Helophilus fasciatus

Description:

Larger Syrphid fly. Black with yellow markings on abdomen. Yellow stripes on thorax, dark eyes. Syrphid flies are called "Hover Flies", "Drone Flies" or "Flower Flies". Many are bee and wasp mimics and some even buzz like bees. However, these flies are harmless and are unable to bite or sting. The larvae of many species of Syrphids are beneficial and feed on aphids and other plant pests.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden. Feeding on the garlic chive blooms.

Notes:

Unfortunately, I don't have much more info on this species.
