Member of the pepper family. 'Awa leaves were used to relieve headaches or aches, applied to the body. The beverage made from the roots and water was used traditionally by Hawaiians to relieve pain and aches and for over-all relaxation. Reference: Plants of Old Hawaii by Lois Lucas
