The gulf fritillary butterfly can be found in the extreme southern United States. The upper surface of the wings is bright orange with black markings. Females are somewhat darker and more extensively marked. The forewing cell contains three black-rimmed white spots. The undersides of the wings are brown with elongated silvery-white spots.
They like open, sunny areas and disturbed sites such as old fields, roadsides, meadows, pastures, and fallow agricultural land. This gulf fritillary resides in a butterfly garden within the Brookgreen Gardens, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
