Nilgai (female)

Boselaphus tragocamelus

Description:

The adult is a female because it has light yellowish skin; males are distinctly blue (or Neel). Cow-like (hence the suffix gai)

Habitat:

We were whizzing past on the highway heading towards Jamnagar when these large animals caught my eye. They were on fallow land bordering the highway.

Notes:

Nilgai are common in this region and are sometimes called Blue Bulls. For many years (and perhaps, to a degree, even now) the resemblance to cows was a safety net for these animals that were not hunted or harmed in any way. Three in One
