American Painted Lady

Vanessa virginiensis

Description:

I had the pleasure of watching this American Painted Lady grow from egg to butterfly.

Habitat:

Eggs found on cudweed mixed in with the grass in my yard.

Notes:

Cudweed was difficult to find in my yard. I had to do a lot of searching to find enough food for the caterpillar. It did not help that the lawn was mowed, potentially destroying other eggs, caterpillars, or host plants.
