Flowering Dogwood

Cornus

Description:

The Dogwood flower is a small flower cluster. These flowers are unique. The four white petals are modified leaves called "bracts". The actual flowering head are the tiny greenish-yellow objects in the center of the bracts. When the bracts of the dogwood flower are fully open, they measure about two inches in diameter. The blooms of the Flowering dogwood blooms are either white or pink. These dogwood flowers are still in their budding stage. They are the state flower of Virginia and North Carolina. These beautiful trees are a reminder that Spring is here in Maryland.
