Argynnis Fritillary

Argynnis sp.

Description:

This butterfly seemed to be oviposting, but it looks like she was depositing them in the grass! It is either Argynnis adippe or Argynnis nerippe, but difficult to be sure which one from this photo.. Adippe:: http://www.neutron.phys.ethz.ch/Lepidopt... Nerippe: http://www.gorodinski.ru/view_nymphalida... http://www.neutron.phys.ethz.ch/Lepidopt...

Habitat:

In a park full of Dahlias and other flowers, high in the mountains behind Nakano, Japan

Hope it's clear for you also, Gilma! Interesting exploratory conversation...

Merci Daniele!

Aha now it's clear... Thanks Daniele. Think i'll leave it there for others!

Haha! Pam, to make it all clear without using anatomical terms I have added an extra image made from one of your pictures, indicating the row of spots in question. Feel free to remove once it's clear for you :-)

Yes, It is so much fun to hear I mean read!!

Hahaha, and I have no idea what postdiscal means. I have a long way to go!! Thank you both for the interesting dialogue...

Daniele, if you would know how long it took for me to understand postdiscal ;-)...

Indeed! Also sometimes drawing a diagram would be easier than referring to wing anatomy (and getting it mixed up because of looking at several different spottings at the same as in my case) :-)

I think sometimes the skippers are easy-rIDers compared to these fritillaries...

Bayucca, yes, we were talking about the same row. My apologies to Pam for the confusion. We do still agree that this is not aglaja :-)

bayucca

Daniele, I think we are talking of the same row :-)
The whites are the submarginal, the missing ones in Aglaja the postdiscal ones.

thanks Daniele for weighing the balance! And bayucca for all your time and great links.

Thanks Paul... but it looks like you've been outnumbered!

I agree with bayucca that this is definitely not aglaja. Here's another criteria: the submarginal spots (that is: the second row of spots from the margin), brownish with white centers, are missing on the hind wing in aglaja, but are visible here:

Good you waited, I changed my ID based on a recheck...
It is Argynnis adippe or Argynnis nerippe. I am sceptic if we can separate the 2 species from each other from this picture. But you can add the 2 candidates in the description section with the corresponding links.
Adippe: http://www.neutron.phys.ethz.ch/Lepidopt...
http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/158...
Nerippe: http://www.gorodinski.ru/view_nymphalida...
http://www.neutron.phys.ethz.ch/Lepidopt...
It is not Argynnis aglaja, since in this one the postdiscal spots are missing.

Thanks bayucca... Now I have a dilemma! I am inclined to go with your ID because of my past experience with your ID's, but I'll wait a while and see what Paul says, or if anyone else confirms it...

I think this time it is Argynnis nerippe, female.
