Diamondback Water Snake

Nerodia rhombifer

Juvenile with well pronounced rectangular blotches on the back and sides. This species has noticeable red/brown eyes that many other water snakes don't have.

Swam right in front of me while I was wading in a swamp, so just reached down and grabbed him. Swamp has a lot of bald cypress in it and is surrounded by oak trees.
