Red-legged Seriema

Cariama cristata

Description:

Tall- almost a meter. Had the air of "I'm the boss around here". Attitude reminded me of a barnyard turkey! Bright raspberry-red legs. Had quite an odd little tuft of feathers at the base of the bill that stuck straight up. One female had hidden a nest behind a rock and was faithfully incubating them. Hope the zoo let her keep them!

Habitat:

Native to South America

Notes:

I've heard the sickle-claw of the seriema's foot compared to that of the claw of the Troadon or the Velociraptor dinosaurs. Interesting concept.

I grew up in southeast Brazil and saw a lot of Seriemas. I remember when I would wake up in the morning in the farm and hear the seriemas cry.
