Indian Fritillary

Argynnis hyperbius

Description:

It was approximately 1 1/2 inches long (just under 4 cm), was black with red markings, and had lots of spines. When it went into a chrysalis, there were hard gold droplet shaped things on it. Very astonishing! The inside and outside markings are completely different.

Habitat:

pansy pot!

Notes:

I found this caterpillar eating pansies in our garden pot. My experiments showed it would only eat pansies. It hatched at around 13 days, and upon release found a mate in just minutes. I'm pretty sure this was a female. Photos #1, 2, 3 and 4 are the female and photo # 6 is the male.

Beautiful series!
It's almost like a wild punk teenage girl turned into a beautiful young lady.

Looks pretty close to the Pipevine Swallowtail but it doesn't have a red stripe
