A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Arctocephalus pusillus ssp doriferus
Large robust fur seal, with the males weighing up to 680 lbs. There is a slightly larger subspecies on the south coast of Africa.
Isolated rock islands in the Southern Ocean, just off the south east corner of Bruny Island, which is on the south east corner of Tasmania. This is a male haul out area, not a breeding colony. The sound level and stench were incredible but it was so interesting to watch these healthy males sparing and vying for the best place on the rocks. They can climb quite steep rocks to get the spot they want.
It was cool to watch them in a wave pool that they seemed to like splashing about in when large waves would come right over the rocks.

Yes, I left her a message today.
lori.tas is in Tasmania. She moved to Tasmania after living for a long time in LA
Tasmania is mainly rural in the central area but the entire south-west area is pretty wild, which we never got to. Disappointed that our rental car could not go to a lot of places we would have liked to see. Next time I will make sure we have something that is insured for gravel roads! but we really loved the east coast beaches, Bruny Island, Cradle Mtn, and hope to go to the southwest and Strahan area when we can afford to go back. We found the prices high in restaurants and hotels. They have a high minimum wage and so anything to do with labour is high. One of the highlights of the trip was the 3 hour Bruny Island Cruise, where I took these photos. Would do that again for sure!
Must have been a great experience!!How is Tasmania?
