Biji Wiji

Acaena novae-zelandiae

Description:

A very common low-growing ground cover plant with spiky red-pink balls following flowers. Very sharp spines are painful to tread on and always end up sticking to your dog..

Habitat:

Open ground at the margin of grass lands.

Notes:

Family: Rosaceae This is a local endemic which has become naturalised in other parts of the world and a pest in some (Calif. Hawaii). The seedheads stick to fur and clothing but it is an excellent attractive groundcover for shade to full sun conditions with dense green coverage even in dry conditions. The nickname Bidi-bidi is a corruption of the Māori name for this plant, Piripiri. http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Reside...
