I understand your point Jellis. But then how do we explain the black color of the bird.It was surely not gray!

Females are gray with white edges on wings showing, males are glossy black with no white showing except in flight.

this bird hear was clearly gray. Both were together side by side on the same tree.

But any juvenile black it would lose the white edges. The bird you have is gray. It is silhouetted in the photos.

can a female be black?

Jellis

Even a juvenile male would be gray.

Do not mean to argue! Any possibility it is a juvenile male?

This is a female. Males you don't see the white on the edges, just a white patch when they fly. Males are glossy and females are gray.

Yes I was there Saturday. Saw and heard the Calliope but they were not being cooperative to photograph. Also saw Nashville & Black-throated Gray Warblers. Ash-throated Flycatcher and many other birds but going to go back on Sunday.

Thanks s o much Jellis.Have you been to Mitchell canyon lately? I was there for the very first time. The rains have brought in some wild life here.I saw a gray fox in the neighborhood.

They have more then one song or call.

It's a phainopepla. They have white patches on their wings and I guess you can just see them with the way he's holding his wings while sitting there.
