Dark brown/rust-colored hard-cased pupal stage of [probably] a winged insect abour 1.25-1.5 inches long.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest suburban area.

Notes:

Spotted on a root ball pulled up during weeding--hence its dirty appearance. It was returned to the place its discovery--less its associated weeds--after imaging.
