Uncooked rice will swell in the birds crop resulting in it bursting, it is extremely painful and in almost every one that I have handled it is fault. This is also the main reason rice is no longer thrown at weddings.

Interesting spotting Harry,this is a Rock Pigeon(Columba livia)
Bread is not the better food for feeding piegons,they can suffocat with the chunks,they have tiny bics and the bread can closed it,so you better give them rice,vegs :)
