Banded Sea Krait

Laticauda colubrina

Description:

This snake was about 1 meter long. It has black bands over its entire body more or less of uniform width on light or dark bluish grey above, yellowish below. Upper lip yellow. Snout yellow, the colour extending backward on each side of the head above the eye leaving a dark bar in between. Rest of the head is black. It's tail is flat.

Habitat:

Celebes sea, Bunaken, Sulawesi Indonesia

Notes:

This snake came swimming by us and explored all the crevasses in the coral before heading to the surface to breath. It swam quickly about 10 meters to the surface stayed there for a minute or so and dove straight back down to where we were diving!
