Russell's viper

Daboia russelii

Description:

Seems to be a juvenile. Not very sure about the ID, approx size: 2-2.5 ft. The genus is after the Hindi name meaning "that lies hid", or "the lurker." When threatened they form a series of S-loops, raise the first third of the body and produce a hiss that is supposedly louder than that of any other snake. When striking from this position, they can exert so much force that even a large individual can lift most of its body off the ground in the process.

Habitat:

Caught from a garden.

Notes:

This was caught from a neighbors garden when it was about to be killed by a snake rescue team member. This team has been started by me in co-operation with my gardener's to save such snakes from being killed. Our area has a good number of snakes which are killed by people due to the fact that there is no one available to call when they see a snake. The gardeners are going through some training under experts whenever they have time. This snake was relocated at a place in a nearby forest.
