Odocoileus virginianus
At first glance I thought this was a doe that bedded down in my backyard. It seemed closer to the house than normal so I went outside to investigate further. As I got close I could tell this was a very young buck and his back legs were in bad shape. He could not get up. Unfortunately, the local police had to destroy him about 20 min after this photo was taken.

This saddens me beyond belief. Your description of him trying to pull himself away...brings terrible grief to me. I'm glad you were able to capture his beauty before it was lost to us forever though.
I was thankful he was off of the road. Fortunately the deer frequent our yard and the next day we had three very healthy ones come by and I took some apples out for them. I snapped some pics too of course http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/157...
Shame man, the harsh reality of the dangers of 'urbanization'.
So lovely!
At least he got to your yard and the police could keep him from suffering too much. Heartbreaking though.
I believe he may have been struck by a car. It was very strange. It was actually his eyes that led me to believe soemthing was not right. I have been around a lot of deer as my ex mother-in-law would get herds of 30-40 at a time in her yard and I fed them for her regulalrly.
He literally tried crawling away from me using only his fore legs. He did not even attempt to stand. It was horribly sad to see and to watch the officer put him down.
What do you think happened to its hind legs? aah man, very sad.
R.I.P dear .
