A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Coragyps atratus
Large black bird with a black featherless head. In flight, silvery patches on the primary feathers can be seen (picture 2). Feed on carrion only (dead animals).
Hilton Head Island, in a residential "plantation".
Research suggests that these birds are actually more closely related to storks than to hawks and eagles. (as per Sibley) The perched bird was hanging out on a large dead pine tree. We saw them flying overhead often during the day.

Haha! Christy, I would be happy to add this and my other two birds of prey spottings to that mission. In fact, I don't know why I hadn't joined it before.:)
Nice series!! I'd love you to add this to the mission Raptors of North America...we're almost to 1000 spottings in the mission!! (I still consider them a bird of prey) http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
