Spiny dogfish

Squalus acanthias

Description:

Dead spiny dogfishes at the New Brighton beach, Christchurch NZ. Allthough the species is been fished worldwide for food, some pakeha fishermen on New Brighton pier, just kill and throw back to the sea the fish that they just caught. They end up been washed on the beach, where the seagulls eat the soft parts and the rest of the fish decomposes on the sand :(

And it's a harmless species...I used to wonder, why don't they just throw the fish back to the sea alive, but I guess they only do it to be sure that they won't catch it again (or, that they hate it so much, they prefer it dead anyway), so they kill it...
