Red-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta canadensis

Description:

Red-breasted Nuthatches breed in the north and down through the Appalachians. They are unusual winter migrants further south in most years. However this year there has been a nearly complete seed crop failure in the northern forests and there is no food available. A huge 'finch irruption' us underway with many species coming much further south than normal. A large number of Red-breasted Nuthatches has come down, and come down further than usual. This was taken in my back yard.
